A Fishbowl alternative that is not only inventory

Fishbowl Inventory is warehouse software, often paired with QuickBooks. It tracks bins, orders, and a manufacturing edition for light production. Public starting prices are in the hundreds of dollars a month, and the classic product is a Windows desktop beside an accounting file.

Small contractors adopt Fishbowl because the shelf got too big for a spreadsheet, then discover the takeoff, the crew, and the invoice still live elsewhere. TrueScope inventory is the lite warehouse: aisle and bin, serials and batches, pick lists, and bills of lading. Purchasing, the BOM, and the books are already in the same app, including on a Mac.

What Fishbowl Inventory is built to do

Fishbowl receives, moves, picks, and ships, and it pushes numbers at QuickBooks. Advanced Manufacturing adds work orders. It assumes inventory is the product you bought and accounting is a different product.

  • QuickBooks-centric sync and a Windows client many shops still run
  • Warehouse depth for distributors whose whole business is stock
  • A monthly bill that does not include takeoff or field service

The lighter version for a small contractor

TrueScope covers multi-location bins, vendor-managed inventory, pick lists, and purchasing against job demand. You do not need a second accounting package to hold the other half of the transaction. Progress billing and simple books are in the same subscription.

A contractor warehouse is not a distributor. Material is for a job, a fab ticket, or a truck. Fishbowl does not measure a plan or schedule the install. TrueScope ties the bin to the takeoff, the work order, and the service call.

Receiving and picking happen on the floor. TrueScope runs on a phone or tablet and on a Mac in the office, with offline cache when the warehouse Wi-Fi drops. You are not remoting into a Windows Fishbowl seat.

Fishbowl’s manufacturing edition is commonly quoted from about $675 a month, with a lower inventory-only tier that is a different product. TrueScope inventory is included at $20 per full user. Prices change. Check the vendor before you buy.

Keep Fishbowl if you are a distributor living in QuickBooks and the warehouse is the company. Move if you are a contractor who bought an inventory app and still assembled the rest of the business by hand.

Questions small contractors ask

Is TrueScope a Fishbowl alternative for Mac?

Yes. Inventory, receiving, and picks run in the browser on a Mac or a PC, and on a phone on the floor. You do not need a Windows inventory client.

Do I still need QuickBooks?

Not for contractor job cost, progress billing, retainage, and vendor bills. A CPA can still take the activity through the API. Fishbowl’s reason for existing is often the QuickBooks link. TrueScope’s is to be the other half too.

Can job demand tell me what to buy?

Yes. Open work orders and projects compare with stock and open purchase orders so the buyer sees the shortage.

$20 a full user. Every module.

Field contributors are $5. Mac, phone, and offline included.
