A Dynamics 365 alternative for small contractors

Microsoft Dynamics 365, and Business Central in particular, is a full ERP on a Microsoft stack. Licensing is per user, often tens of dollars to over a hundred depending on the role, and a partner usually implements it. Finance, supply chain, and projects can all be turned on. So can a year of meetings.

Small contractors look for a Dynamics alternative when the partner quote arrives before the first job is loaded. TrueScope is the lite business system: estimates, purchasing, inventory, shop routing, field crews, and progress billing. It is not a general ledger for a multi-company group, and it does not need a Microsoft partner to go live.

What Microsoft Dynamics 365 is built to do

Dynamics 365 is a family of enterprise applications. Business Central is the smaller ERP and it is still an ERP: chart of accounts, dimensions, and extensions. Construction and manufacturing are partner solutions as often as they are out-of-the-box screens.

  • Role-based Microsoft licenses and a partner of record
  • Financial dimensions and inventory costing a controller expects
  • Extensions for anything vertical, including construction

The lighter version for a small contractor

TrueScope books a contractor can run: job cost, schedule of values, retainage, vendor bills, and a tax ledger, next to the operational record. You skip dimensions, consolidation, and the extension that would have been “phase two.”

Dynamics can be extended until it covers a mixed contractor, which is the expensive path. TrueScope already treats a company as a combination of takeoff, shop, warehouse, and field. The modules are the extensions, and they are included.

Dynamics mobile depends on the apps the partner deployed. TrueScope is usable on a phone, a tablet, and a Mac from the start, with offline support for the field. You are not waiting on a Windows remote desktop to see stock.

Business Central licenses are public per-user subscriptions and the partner project is separate. TrueScope is $20 per full user a month, all contractor modules included. Prices change. Check the vendor before you buy.

When Microsoft Dynamics 365 is still the right call

Stay with Dynamics if you are already a Microsoft ERP shop, you have a finance team, and a partner is maintaining extensions you use. Move if the alternative you wanted was “something smaller that already speaks contractor.”

Questions small contractors ask

Is TrueScope a Business Central alternative?

For a small contractor’s operations and job cost, yes. It is not a replacement for Business Central’s general ledger, dimensions, or multi-company consolidation.

Do I need a partner to configure it?

No. Modules match trades you can name: takeoff, job central, inventory, projects, field service, and books. Hide the ones you do not run.

Will it run on a Mac?

Yes. The whole app is in the browser, including the screens an owner opens on a MacBook.

$20 a full user. Every module.

Field contributors are $5. Mac, phone, and offline included.
