Takeoff and drawings

A DraftSight alternative for contractors who also build

DraftSight is Dassault’s 2D CAD editor, usually bought as a cheaper way to open and edit DWG files than AutoCAD. It is still a drawing program. It drafts. It does not know which bin the angle is in, which technician is on site tomorrow, or whether the draw has been billed.

Small contractors reach for DraftSight to sketch a countertop, mark a sleeve, or clean up a shop ticket. TrueScope’s 2D CAD drafting and revision control is that lighter job, stored on the work order with the takeoff, the BOM, and the field notes. You do not keep a separate CAD subscription for files the shop then retypes.

What DraftSight is built to do

DraftSight edits 2D drawings and speaks DWG. Professional and Premium tiers add constraints, APIs, and mechanical extras a design office uses. The product stops when the drawing is saved.

  • DWG compatibility aimed at people exchanging native CAD
  • API and automation for drafting departments
  • A desktop CAD habit that never touches inventory or payroll of the job

The lighter version for a small contractor

If the drawing is a shop detail or a revision cloud, TrueScope drafting is enough. Pair it with takeoff when the picture has to become a quantity. Leave full DWG production to a CAD seat you actually staff.

A millwork shop, a steel fabricator, or an HVAC contractor draws a little and then cuts, welds, or installs. DraftSight covers the drawing hour. TrueScope covers the drawing hour and the rest of the day: purchasing, routing, dispatch, and the invoice.

DraftSight is desktop CAD. Revisions in TrueScope can be opened on a Mac in the office or a tablet on the mezzanine, next to the photos and the daily log, including when the connection is poor.

DraftSight is a paid 2D CAD subscription on top of whatever you use to estimate and bill. TrueScope puts light 2D drafting inside the $20 full-user plan. Prices change. Check the vendor before you buy.

When DraftSight is still the right call

Keep DraftSight if customers or engineers require native DWG round-trips every day. Switch the contractor operations — measure, revise, build, bill — to TrueScope so CAD is not also your business system.

Questions small contractors ask

Does TrueScope open every DWG the way DraftSight does?

No. DraftSight is a DWG editor. TrueScope is 2D drafting and revision control for shop and field work, plus the business around the drawing. Keep a CAD tool if native DWG exchange is the product you sell.

Why switch if DraftSight is already the cheap CAD?

Cheap CAD is still only CAD. The savings show up when estimating, stock, and scheduling stop being three other subscriptions.

Can installers see the latest sketch on a phone?

Yes. Drawings and plan views travel with the job on mobile, instead of a plot someone emailed last week.

$20 a full user. Every module.

Field contributors are $5. Mac, phone, and offline included.
