Takeoff and drawings
A lighter AutoCAD alternative for small contractors
AutoCAD is a full drafting system. Architects and engineers produce permit sets, 3D models, and discipline-specific drawings in it. Autodesk’s published subscription is about $2,095 a year, or $260 a month, before add-ons. Many small contractors bought it because they needed to open a DWG, sketch a detail, and measure a run.
That is a lite job wearing an expert price. TrueScope includes 2D CAD drafting and revision control next to digital takeoff, so shop sketches, redlines, and measured quantities live with the estimate, the bill of materials, and the field ticket. It is not a replacement for production architectural CAD or 3D coordination.

More details
What AutoCAD is built to do
AutoCAD drafts and documents design. The learning curve, the Windows-first plugin world, and the subscription assume someone whose profession is drawing. A contractor who also welds, pulls wire, or hangs equipment uses a fraction of the command set.
- 3D modeling, complex xrefs, and discipline toolsets
- A command language that takes months to get fast at
- A design file that still has to be retyped into estimating and inventory
The lighter version for a small contractor
TrueScope’s 2D drafting and revision control covers shop details, markups, and drawing issues a fabricator or trade contractor revises on the job. Takeoff on the same plan turns the geometry into quantities. You are not paying for a design studio so you can redline a bracket.
AutoCAD does not know your stock, your crew, or your retainage. Contractors who design a little and build a lot end up with AutoCAD plus a takeoff tool plus an accounting file. TrueScope keeps the light drafting in the same app as purchasing, work orders, and invoices.
AutoCAD wants a workstation. TrueScope drafting, takeoff, and plan view run in the browser on a Mac and on a tablet at the site. Revision notes do not wait until someone is back at the CAD seat.
AutoCAD is publicly listed around $2,095 per year. TrueScope full users are $20 a month, and 2D drafting sits in the same subscription as takeoff and job costing. Prices change. Check the vendor before you buy.

TrueScope features that cover this work
- Takeoffs
Measure the plan instead of using CAD as a calculator.
- Job central
Shop drawings and BOMs stay on the work order.
- Projects
Daily logs and drawing issues live on the job, not in a plot folder.
When AutoCAD is still the right call
Keep AutoCAD if you produce permit sets, 3D models, or consultant drawings other firms have to open as native CAD. Use TrueScope when the seat is really there to mark up, measure, and run a contracting business.
Questions small contractors ask
Is TrueScope a full AutoCAD replacement?
No. It is a lighter 2D drafting and revision tool for shop and field work, plus takeoff and the rest of the business. Complex design still belongs in AutoCAD or a similar CAD system.
Can a small shop do CAD on a Mac?
Yes for 2D drafting, revisions, and takeoff. TrueScope runs in the browser, so you are not buying a Windows PC only to open drawings.
Why not AutoCAD LT?
LT is cheaper CAD and still only CAD. You would keep paying for takeoff, inventory, and scheduling separately. TrueScope is the smaller drafting tool attached to those jobs.
$20 a full user. Every module.
Field contributors are $5. Mac, phone, and offline included.
